But which nations have been the most dominant in the modern era in terms of there teams qualifying for the Champions League quarter-finals?
At FC J2 Team, we have amalgamated just that, working out how many times clubs from each nation have qualified for the last eight in the Champions League since the competition’s re-format in the 1992/93 season. So without further ado, let’s take a look at which countries have been commanding in the latter stages of Europe’s top club tournament.
Which nations have dominated the Champions League in the modern era?
Above we can see which teams have been dominant in the Champions League in terms of making it to the quarter-finals, and it comes with no great surprise that leading the way are Spain when it comes to most successful nations. Since 1992/93, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Malaga, Deportivo La Coruña, Málaga, Sevilla, Valencia , and Villarreal have all made it to the last eight as LaLiga sides, adding up to a grand total of 57 times. In second place is England, with eight Premier League teams making it to the quarter-finals for a total of 53 occasions. They are followed by Germany in third. Clubs from the Bundesliga have made it to the quarter-finals 35 times – 22 of which have come from Bayern Munich.
In fourth spot is Italy, with Serie A clubs making it to the Champions League quarter-finals 32 times since 1992/93. Fifth place goes to France – Ligue 1 clubs have made it 19 times. Portugal are sixth, with Benfica and Porto making it to the last eight on 13 occasions between them. Seventh goes to the Netherlands, with Eredivisie clubs progressing to the quarter-finals on seven occasions. Two Dutch sides remain in this season’s competition and will be looking to add to that number. Clubs from Greece, Turkey and Ukraine have made it three times, completing the top 10.
